Damien Hirst supports 1in11 campaign to aid children's education in Asia
Damien Hirst's portrait of Barcelona striker Lionel Messi will be joined by artwork by Takashi Murakami at an auction in London next month. The painting, a portrait of the footballer in the style of Hirst's iconic spin paintings, has been donated by Victim, the charity founded by Hirst, in aid of the 1in11 campaign. The campaign is a collaboration between Unicef, FC Barcelona Foundation and Reach Out To Asia and aims to extend educational opportunities to marginalised children in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nepal. Its title derives from the fact that 1 in 11 children across the world do not attend school and are thus excluded from the benefits of education, which amounts to 58 million children who will not get the chance to fulfil their potential.
Hirst's artwork will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on 12th February to raise funds for the charity. Messi, a three-time winner of the Golden Boot award and a Unicef goodwill ambassador, is a figurehead for 1in11 and is leading the efforts to raise awareness and money for the charity.
