In this series of specially commissioned colour c-type prints taken in southern France the artist has photographed the trellis supports of windows to create dark crosses against the familiar Provencal palette. These photographs act as a formal and emotional link between Howard's figurative and abstract work and lead us from the dark pathos of the suicides to the sublimity of her abstract paintings.

Rachel Howard

Howard was born in County Durham and graduated from Goldsmiths College, London, in 1991. She was awarded the Princes Trust Award in 1992 to support her art practice, was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2004 and received the British Council Award in 2008.
