Franz West stops Uncle Chairs

January 13, 2010 by Ellie

The artist Franz West recently announced the discontinuation of his Uncle Chairs. The chairs, a much desired staple of his work, are made by binding patterns together out of industrial strapping. Possibly the most recognizable of West’s tactile forms, the webbing of his ‘Uncle chairs’ have an immediately familiar texture and colour, reminiscent of shopping baskets, deck chairs and packing crates. His use of colour creates for us a sense of the exotic, too – African, Aztec or Indian textiles are conjured in his pairings of checkered greens, reds and oranges.
