Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project

November 4, 2010 by Kay

Stacy Engman curates the first contemporary art Tarot Card Deck in history that features original artwork from a wide range of the world’s top creative icons.

For this project, an interdisciplinary mix of today’s top creative icons have each interpreted a Tarot card using their own iconography. Each artist has been matched with a Tarot card based on archetypal themes that their work reference. For example, Tracey Emin is matched with the Empress card as it is the most sensual of the deck, Terence Koh is contributing The Lovers card for his work about lovers and his zines, Will Cotton has taken on the Four of Coins as it speaks about gluttony, Kalup Linzy was matched with the Tower because of the impending drama found in his soap opera works, etc.

The exhibition will be on view during the month of November 2010 at the National Arts Club.

Examples of some of the artists participating in the project: Catherine Opie – Four of Wands Jake & Dinos Chapman – Judgement John Currin – Ten of Cups Kehinde Wiley – Nine of Pentacles Kenny Scharf – Ace of Pentacles Marc Jacobs – Knight of Pentacles Rachel Howard – Five of Cups Rashid Johnson – Eight of Cups Raymond Pettibon – The Fool Ryan McGinley – The Star Terence Koh – The Lovers Thomas Schütte – The Devil Tim Noble & Sue Webster – Three of Swords Tony Oursler – Six of Pentacles Tracey Emin – The Empress Vivienne Westwood – The Chariot Yang Fudong – The Hermit Yoshitomo Nara – Four of Swords
