CURRENT: A Unique Proposal at Contemporary Applied Arts

January 28, 2011 by Kay

'A Unique Proposal'

A Showcase of Romantically Inspired Craft

14th January - 19th February 2011

Contemporary Applied Arts, 2 Percy Street, London W1T 1DD

Contemporary Applied Arts is delighted to announce the launch of 'A Unique Proposal', a selling exhibition of one-off pieces made by hand and designed with romance in mind. Whether it's a wedding gift, Valentine's gift or simply a heart-felt symbol of affection, this show features exciting textiles, glass, ceramics, wood and metal objects that are impossible to resist.

For the exhibition, the gallery is being transformed into a lavish wedding reception to contextualise the craft collections– with a head table dressed with Rupert Spira ceramics, gorgeous turned wood bowls by Peter Archer, Spring wedding flowers by Paula Pryke and textile-inspired chocolate wedding favours and chocolate sculptures by Sir Hans Sloane chocolates. Other 'guest' tables will be themed, and all will feature some of the best one-off tableware handmade in the UK including ceramics by Sue Paraskeva and glass tableware by Michael Ruh, Lindean Mill and Phil Atrill all made specifically for this exhibition.

The gallery walls will be covered with the passionately colourful woven work of Ptolemy Mann and the newest intricate textile work from Susie Freeman. Freeman (who has a huge piece of textile featuring medical tablets in the British Museum) is producing three wedding veils from her newest textiles, using torn botanical books and pebbles – celebrating the role of textiles in the wedding ceremony. Glorious glass cake stands by several different glass artists will tempt; racy automata pieces by Will Smax will amuse with their 50s naughtiness; divine, graphic silver work by Rajesh Gogna will inspire; and romantic mosaics by Cleo Mussi will delight.

To help mark the exhibition CAA is launching a much-anticipated gift list service like no other called ‘Bespoke: A Handmade Gift List’ Whether you are getting married, celebrating a special birthday or other special occasion CAA offers a great alternative to the more traditional ways of holding a wedding or gift list. Couples or those receiving the gifts can arrange a list of pieces that they would like bought for them, or guests can simply contribute toward a voucher which they can redeem on several pieces or one important piece – like a piece of furniture or a particularly collectable piece.
