Social Media Meets Art With David Birkin's Severe Clear

June 10, 2014 by Samia

This past Memorial Day the skies of New York City were emblazoned by a thought provoking statement. Artist David Birkin took an excerpt from a rejection letter sent by the CIA to the American Civil Liberties Union in response to their Freedom of Information Act request for information relating to the US Government's classified drone program. The full reply reads, "...the CIA can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of records responsive to your request."

The artist then encouraged New Yorkers who saw the message to post photos on Twitter and Instagram. The result was a stunning assortment of blue sky images with white cloud like words providing a whimsical presentation with a very real and somewhat controversial message. The images will be featured in Birkin's upcoming Whitney ISP Exhibition.
