This weekend sees the return of The Art Car Boot Fair taking over Turner Contemporary’s car park in Margate, Kent, England. On Sunday 30th of August, 12-4pm for only £3 admission the Art Car Boot Fair promises “fun, frivolity filled afternoon packed with serious art bargains”. The Fair will feature artists such as Sir Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Rachel Howard, Matt Collishaw, Polly Morgan or Art on a Postcard with Rankin. Also featuring Richard Strange's Cabaret Futura that will present the Daylight Cabaret/ Margate Edition! Other special guests are also to be expected.
The Art Car Boot Fair is an original idea by Karen Ashton and has been developed by Karen and her sister Helen Hayward since our first event in 2004 in London. It was an idea that grew out of a desire to pick up where Joshua Compston’s ‘Fete Worse than Death’ and Gavin Turk’s ‘Livestock Market’ and Articultural Shows’ blazed a trail in the 90’s and to re-introduce some summer fun and frivolity into a thriving but increasingly commercial London art scene. The Art Car Boot Fair is meant to be a day when the artists let their hair down and for all-comers to engage with art in a totally informal way, and to pick up some real art bargains to boot!
For this Margate Edition, Rachel Howard will be signing Balck Dog posters at the price of £20.
She will also have a few black dog etchings which she will sell for £325, special art car boot price.
Derived from Howard's drawings, the subject matter draws on the rich tradition in art history where the dog has been romantically portrayed as the human companion, vigilant protector and loyal guardian of the dead. Yet here, dogs are also shown as animals prone to abuse and neglect by humans, and perhaps an emblem of recent times.
