Pippy Houldsworth Gallery presents Old Rope, a group show curated by artist Polly Morgan, from 11 July to 30 August 2014. Bringing together new work by Susan Collis, Martin Creed, Tracey EminBoo Saville, Amba Sayal-Bennett and Sue Webster, Morgan wishes to explore how each of these artists engages with the term ‘Money for Old Rope'. The expression is said to come from a time when old ropes were picked apart for their frayed fibres and reused for caulking or stuffing mattresses. Another reading of this expression dates back to public executions when souvenir hunters would pay for pieces of a used noose transformed by its association with an infamous criminal.

Essentially, the expression means to make money or an easy profit by selling something which is perceived as seemingly worthless. Discussing the premise of the show, Morgan explains ‘I am interested in alchemical artists who see value where others see waste, who re-purpose the disposed-of or the disposable, or construct something new out of something old. As a whole, I think it could raise interesting questions about how we assign value to things, be it through function, age or simply proximity to fame.’

Adam Dix in Anthology 2014

CHARLIE SMITH London presents Anthology for the fourth year running. Anthology is an annual open call exhibition with a global outreach. Ten applicants are selected to exhibit at the gallery by a five person jury, from which one winner is selected and awarded a £2,000 cash prize. Previous winners are Tom Ormond, Eric Manigaud and Robert Crosse. The 2014 jury members are Zavier Ellis, Hélène Guérin, Justin Hammond, Marcus Harvey and Jessica Lack.

Angus Fairhurst: Unprinted

Unprinted by Angus Fairhurst (1966–2008) is a comprehensive overview of his printed works from 1992 to 2006, including silkscreens and etchings. The earliest works in the show, ‘When I Woke up in the Morning the Feeling Was Still There’ (1992, from The London Portfolio, Paragon Press), and ‘When I Woke up in the Morning the Feeling Was Still There’ (1997), are silkscreen prints taken from an initial photograph; the first an individual print, the latter made up of four prints. Each print depicts a single figure – the same man who appeared in the seminal work ‘Man With Dream Colours’ (1992) – standing in an artist’s studio and holding a blank white canvas. A square of colour has been printed on top of each canvas, but deliberately misaligned with its borders. 'I wanted to play on the misalignment of the hard form and the notion of feeling, both physical and emotional, which is something you cannot be so sure about' (Angus Fairhurst, Contemporary British Art in Print, 1995). The square is yellow in the earlier print; while the later set encompasses green, red, yellow and blue versions. The space we most associate with colour and light, the studio, has been stripped of all those characteristics. It is inhabited by a solitary area of colour that seems not to be really part of the work, but rather super-imposed on to it. The title, prominently printed below the image, perhaps alludes to love, loss, despair, or hope, with the colours somehow standing in for all of those emotions.

The Space Where I Am is a group show exploring ideas of the void and emptiness from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition’s title is taken from philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s book The Poetics of Space (1958), which describes the lived experience of space and where he contended “it is better to live in a state of impermanence than in one of finality”. All of the assembled works examine the dialectic between absence and presence, primarily valuing absence in the construction of form.

Fitzroy Gallery and Tracy Williams, Ltd. present On the Blue Shore of Silence, a benefit for Parley for the Oceans in support of their initiative, The Vortex Project. Titled after the poem by Pablo Neruda, this exhibition delves into the open sea. Featuring work by over 50 artists, the show consists of sculpture, photography, painting, video, and works on paper. As a group, the artworks are evocative- in some instances more in essence and atmosphere than in physicality- of the power and enchantment of the ocean.
