With cartoonish humour, this brash wall paper consumes the act of resistance – the punkish sneer – in a reminder of the outside being embraced by the capitalist inside. Marlon Brando’s character in the post war mob film on the Waterfront is an archetype of the male working class hero. But even he, in answer to the question ‘What are you rebelling against’ – sullenly snarled ‘what’ve you got?’ In these worrying times there is no rebellion beyond the voting booth.

Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk was born in Guildford, 1967, and studied at the Royal College of Art. In 1991, he was denied his MA degree from the college having exhibited only a blue heritage plaque of his name on the white walls of the exhibition space. This is the same plaque printed on Turk’s Pretty Taxing disc sleeve.

Questioning the originality and authenticity of art has led to Turk’s eminence as one of the young British artists, and has resulted in his work being collected by Tate Modern, London; Charles Saatchi; Cass Sculpture Foundation, Goodwood, UK and Victoria and Albert Musuem, London.
