Tracey Emin

Tracey Emin, born in 1963 in London, and raised in Margate, is known internationally as one of the most prominent of the Young British Artists, and has become widely known for her confessional, autobiographical art. She studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1989.

Emin uses materials and media broadly, including painting, writing, neon, sculpture, embroidery collage and the detritus and objects accrued in her own life. Her work is often claimed to be honest, humorous and self-aware and touches on wider subjects such as sexuality, intimacy and the role of the artist.

Recent group exhibitions include Aftershock: Contemporary British Art 1990-2006, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou; Capital Museum, Beijing, 2006; Lights, Camera Action: Artists' Films for the Cinema, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2007 and Folkestone Triennial: Tales of Time and Space, Folkestone, Kent, 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include When I Think About Sex…, White Cube, London, 2005; Tracey Emin: Borrowed Light, British Pavillion, Venice Biennale, 2007 and Tracey Emin: 20 Years, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, 2008.

Tracey Emin lives and work in London.
