Mat Collishaw at Palais Jaques Coeur

September 26, 2012 by Kay

Des Images, Des Histories 9 June – 30 September 2012 Palais Jacques Coeur 18000 Bourges, France

A number of Mat Collishaw’s seminal works, including his acclaimed Last Meal series, are being featured in Des Images, Des Histories which has been organised by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, a national organisation that looks after France’s historical buildings.

The exhibition is an exploration of Medieval and neo-Medieval literature, monumental architecture and romantic Gothic art. Collishaw’s works were selected based on their affinity with the Gothic architecture of Palais Jacques Coeur.

Tim Noble And Sue Webster - Nihilistic Optimistic

September 24, 2012 by Kay

10 October 2012 – 24 November 2012

The Directors of Blain|Southern are delighted to present Nihilistic Optimistic, Tim Noble & Sue Webster’s first major solo exhibition in London since 2006. Featuring six large-scale works, the show builds upon the artists’ sustained investigation into self-portraiture, further deconstructing the relationship between materiality and form which has been so intrinsic to their practice.

Constructed principally from discarded wood and other materials, the artists describe these sculptures as ‘street compositions’. Each work appears abstracted or even unfinished as the debris of the artists’ studio – gathered sawdust, wood shavings and tools – lie scattered around the sculptures. A sense of urban chaos is implicit within the construction of the surrounding gallery environment; this is not an isolated white cube space, but one which remains connected to the studio and the streets – to the source of these artworks.

There was a kind of deliberate choice not to use such recognisable objects any more, and to start fracturing things up - splintering things. So the mind has to wander in a different way, like you’re giving and taking, and it’s as much about the gaps and holes in between.” Tim Noble

When illuminated, a number of works cast shadow portraits upon the wall; the artists are represented both together and alone, as a unit and as individuals. In My Beautiful Mistake (2012), this light source is poignantly omitted, throwing the focus on the tentative material composition of the sculpture itself, and its sense of impending destruction.

The exhibition’s dualistic title, Nihilistic Optimistic, responds to the oppositional forces present within these works, and indeed within the artists themselves; the show is at once constructive and destructive, hopeful and despairing. Light and shadow, form and absence, figuration and abstraction all inform one another and exist in a constant state of tension.

A catalogue accompanies the exhibition, featuring contributions by Gustav Metzger, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Jon Savage. In collaboration with The Vinyl Factory, Tim Noble & Sue Webster have also produced a limited edition artwork in the form of a 10-inch record.

Damien Hirst- Beautiful Paper Spin for Situation Gigi, 2012, Acrylic on Paper, 28.625 in (728 mm) diameter, Unique Estimate:£15,000 - £20,000

Gigi Giannuzzi, the maverick publisher of Trolley Books and more recently TJ Boulting gallery, was recently diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas. This is devastating news for many who know him and respect his work as one of the bravest and most beautiful of creative forces, publishing through Trolley many important stories through photography, reportage and contemporary art, but also personally, as a rare and one-off crazy spirit.

To support him now, as he has helped and recognised many over the years, artists who know Gigi have donated their work for a special auction to help raise money for him. The funds will go towards alternative cancer treatments which he is currently seeking at a private clinic near Munich, Germany. The auction will feature works by many major artists, as well as several who have worked directly with Gigi over the years. In particular Polly Morgan and Mat Collishaw have been the driving force behind the artists and auction itself, and Sarah Lucas, who has given over her 'situations' space for the night, has hence given the name of the auction - SITUATION GIGI. We hope that many of you will be able to support the auction by bidding on the works available either online or in person at the auction itself. Many thanks in advance for all your help and support!

Tracey Emin- Untitled (Woman on Bed), 1995, Monoprint, 41.9 x 29.7 cm, Unique, Framed by Darbyshire, Estimate:£15,000 - £18,000

The auction will be divided into two parts - the LIVE auction which will be conducted by Oliver Barker from Sotheby's on Thursday 20th September at 7pm, and also a SILENT auction which will be held online until 30th September 6pm.

All of the artworks are available to view online in advance of the live auction, and those who are unable to take part in the live auction can submit in advance their highest maximum bid by clicking the button underneath the artwork. Deadline for submitting maximum bids for LIVE auction is 5pm Thursday 20th September. The silent auction will give people who were unable to bid or were unsuccessful bidders at the live auction another chance to buy artwork. Please note all sale prices will be in Pounds sterling. Successful bidders must pay for shipping. Work is indicated whether it comes framed. To attend the live auction and bid on the night or to register as a phone bidder, please email
