Known for sculpting half or three quarter scale figurines of his body and that of his wife Yoko, Don Brown is interested in the way bodies support one another, slump, pose or perch. In contrast to the conventions of classical sculpture, his figures expose human realism, cast to represent some of the small details of humankind’s physique, and to belie the myth of the hero in antique iconography.
Don Brown studied at the Royal College of Art, London. He has had a number of international solo exhibitions, including a major exhibition titled Yoko at Le Consortium, Dijon, France, in 2007. His work has been included in group shows throughout Britain and Europe, including The Naked Portrait, 1900-2007 at the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, the 2007 Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition, and Timer 01, Triennale Bovisa, Milan, 2007. He lives and works in Suffolk, England.

Sculpture Edition: Yoko XXXVI
Other Criteria are launching a new sculpture edition by Don Brown, XXXVI. It is an edition of 20 and made of porcelain.
Yoko XXXVI is an editioned sculpture of Don Brown’s wife Yoko, a series which have been ongoing throughout his career. Don Brown’s art explores questions of representational perfection. His sculptural vocabulary harks back to classical antiquity and the elegance and idealism of neoclassical marbles such as Canova’s The Three Graces (1814-17), while also invoking modernist realism as instanced by Degas’ La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans (1881). In Brown’s distinctive take on classical sculpture, the place of an idealised heroine is taken by the real-life figure of the artist’s wife in a casual pose. Yoko becomes a conflation of the generic and the individual.See the work on our website soon.

SITUATION GIGI — An Auction by Artists in Aid of Gigi Giannuzzi
Gigi Giannuzzi, the maverick publisher of Trolley Books and more recently TJ Boulting gallery, was recently diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas. This is devastating news for many who know him and respect his work as one of the bravest and most beautiful of creative forces, publishing through Trolley many important stories through photography, reportage and contemporary art, but also personally, as a rare and one-off crazy spirit.
To support him now, as he has helped and recognised many over the years, artists who know Gigi have donated their work for a special auction to help raise money for him. The funds will go towards alternative cancer treatments which he is currently seeking at a private clinic near Munich, Germany. The auction will feature works by many major artists, as well as several who have worked directly with Gigi over the years. In particular Polly Morgan and Mat Collishaw have been the driving force behind the artists and auction itself, and Sarah Lucas, who has given over her ‘situations’ space for the night, has hence given the name of the auction – SITUATION GIGI.
Artists include: Alighiero e Boetti, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Don Brown, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Chien Chi Chang, Mat Collishaw, Keith Coventry, Angela de la Cruz, Tracey Emin, Alixandra Fazzina, Paul Fryer, Colin Glen, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst, Rachel Howard, Henry Hudson, Philip Jones Griffiths, Michael Joo, Jannis Kounellis, Abigail Lane, Juliana Cerqueira Leite, Richard Long, Sarah Lucas, Robin Maddock, Alex Majoli, Adam McEwen, Harland Miller, Polly Morgan, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, George Osodi, Paolo Pellegrin, Benedetto Pietromarchi, Stephanie Quayle, Boo Saville, Jane Simpson, Cindy Sherman, Patti Smith, Jennifer Taylor, Laureana Toledo, Gavin Turk, Keith Tyson, Vedovamazzei, Nick Waplington, Jane and Louise WilsonFind out more on our blog here.
