This kit was originally produced after the artist partnered with ‘Fine Cell Work’ on the manufacture of a series of Boetti appropriations. An anagram of Gavin Turk these images reference Alighiero Boetti’s embroidered text pieces made in collaboration with artisans in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Here you are invited to make your own intricate embroidery of the artist’s name.
Gavin Turk was born in Guildford, 1967, and studied at the Royal College of Art. In 1991, he was denied his MA degree from the college having exhibited only a blue heritage plaque of his name on the white walls of the exhibition space. This is the same plaque printed on Turk’s Pretty Taxing disc sleeve.
Questioning the originality and authenticity of art has led to Turk’s eminence as one of the young British artists, and has resulted in his work being collected by Tate Modern, London; Charles Saatchi; Cass Sculpture Foundation, Goodwood, UK and Victoria and Albert Musuem, London.
