The artist takes on Warhol, the ringmaster of appropriation and the inventor of hyper-normalisation. In this playful hi-jack of Warhol’s self-portraits, which depicted him in his infamous blonde wig. Fright Wig Green/Purple/Red shows Turk as Warhol in an ominous self-portrait, the protagonist somewhere between Warhol and Turk, a cult icon and a splash of paint.

Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk was born in Guildford, 1967, and studied at the Royal College of Art. In 1991, he was denied his MA degree from the college having exhibited only a blue heritage plaque of his name on the white walls of the exhibition space. This is the same plaque printed on Turk’s Pretty Taxing disc sleeve.

Questioning the originality and authenticity of art has led to Turk’s eminence as one of the young British artists, and has resulted in his work being collected by Tate Modern, London; Charles Saatchi; Cass Sculpture Foundation, Goodwood, UK and Victoria and Albert Musuem, London.
