Josh Cheuse started his photography career in nightclubs at the age of 16 and won a full scholarship for photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. As well as taking pictures of bands and music artists, he has designed music merchandise, packaging and sleeve artwork, shot videos and created websites.

Josh Cheuse’s remarkable intimacies with the music world over more than 20 years are shown here in his photographic prints taken from the iconic Rockers Galore publication. Available for the first time exclusively through Other Criteria.

Josh Cheuse

Josh Cheuse was born in New York in 1965. He won a full photography scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York, having started his photography career at the age of 16. He was shooting bands in nightclubs across the city, even using a school payphone to ring up The Clash at their Manhattan studio to request a shoot. The ambitious teen would go on to photograph the Beastie Boys (his close friends) and other hip-hop and reggae artists for publications like Rolling Stone and SPIN. As well as taking pictures of bands and music artists, he has designed music merchandise, packaging and sleeve artwork, shot videos and created websites. He is currently a senior art director at at Sony BMG and lives in Jersey City, NJ.
