Press release: FIONA BANNER PERFORMANCE IN ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER CRITERIA
Other Criteria are proud to announce Fiona Banner's first ever London performance and the launch of her book Performance Nude, to take place on 24tht March at 121 Charing Cross Road. Banner will paint a description of a nude on canvas before a live audience, engaging the crowd in this unique way mirrors the content of the book.
From ‘The Birth of Venus’ to art school classrooms across the globe, artists have, over time, employed life models in an attempt to capture the essence of the human. As part of a project which took on various forms between 2006 - 2009, Performance Nude illustrates Banner's use of language to portray her models; she renders them not in figurative gestures, but in words. She initially began describing humans in action in war films, and this progressed to porn films, which led to a strip tease artist in the studio, and on to a series of live performances. In her nudes Banner strips off the narrative of her previous work, and looks at the human form alone, a bare protagonist.
In her performances she specifically uses ‘real’ people rather than practiced life models as her subject, choosing to capture the strain and tension created in the room by the presence of a novice. Whatever discomfort is revealed in the relationship is tested further by introducing an audience to the room. With her performance Banner questions the difference between looking and perceiving; the separation between experiencing something, and the language we use to understand it.
The performance comes at a timely moment, with Banner set to create the next installation for the Tate Britain Duveens Commission 2010, supported by Sotheby’s. Her new work, created especially for the neoclassical Duveen galleries at the heart of Tate Britain, will be unveiled on 28 June 2010 and will be on display until 3 January 2011. Artists who have previously undertaken the Commission include Eva Rothschild (2009), Martin Creed (2008), Mark Wallinger (2007), and Michael Landy (2004).
