Kenji Hirisawa: Celebrity

July 7, 2011 by Georgia

Kenji Hirisawa's first solo exhibition - Celebrity - is a series of thermographic photographs featuring waxwork celebrity figures and their fans, taken inside the wondrous, wacky world of Madame Tussauds.

Contrary to a normal camera, which functions on the basis of visible light, the thermographic camera measures infrared radiation and creates visual displays of heat. As a result of using this device, Hirisawa's series captures smiling tourists as wildly coloured figures next to almost invisible, lifeless wax statues.

His works brilliantly display the madness surrounding celebrity admiration at the wax museum, where people pay and queue for hours to stand next to a fabricated copy of the person they adore. In Hirisawa’a images the emperor loses not only his clothes but his whole appearance and it becomes apparent that the passion of the visitor merely is an empty admiration of a non-existent, distant being.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 7 July and runs until 30 July 2011.
