Other Criteria Launch first Etching by Mali Morris

January 7, 2014 by Georgie

Other Criteria have recently collaborated with renowned British Painter Mali Morris RA, in the making of 'Drift' - a polymer photogravure etching.

Mali's first solo exhibition was at The Serpentine Gallery, London and since then she has had a number of solo exhibitions across the globe - including Tokyo & New York. As well as her own long career as a practicing artist, she has also nurtured those of others, lecturing in many departments of Fine Art, including Chelsea College of Art, Royal College of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art. In 2010 she was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts.

Described as a 'conjurer in the world of colour', Mali Morris' work constructs light and space through complex relationships of colour and shape. These compositions, seemingly simple at first sight, become more intricate as the painterly process of transparent layering and removal becomes apparent. They are direct and luminous works which ambitiously explore the possibilities of contemporary abstraction.

Drift Mali Morris 370 x 442mm Polymer gravure etching Edition of 35

The first etching edition by artist Mali Morris, has been published by Other Criteria. The work, entitled Drift is now on display and for sale at Other Criteria’s Hinde Street shop in Marylebone and is available at A short film about the making of this work can also be seen on the Other Criteria blog.

Elected an RA in 2010, Mali Morris is known for her abstract paintings that have complex inner rhythms of colour and form. ‘How colour operates is always surprising,’ she says, ‘it makes a luminosity that opens up space in a painting. If you get things right, it can transform flat, inert canvas and pigment into something that is constantly alive and shifting, a world inside a world.

Working on this new print, Drift, with Other Criteria was an education and a pleasure. I discovered just how different making a print is from painting. It was like turning everything inside out. And it's given me some new directions to try out back in my own studio’
