Other Criteria New York Launch Yoko XXXVI

July 28, 2014 by Mary

Other Criteria are pleased to announce the launch of Yoko XXXVI, a porcelain sculpture edition by Don Brown and his first work in this medium. You are invited to view the work at Art Southampton, Stand AS75 and from 28th July at Other Criteria’s store on Broome Street, SoHo.

Brown’s series of sculptures of his wife Yoko, have been a continuous focus throughout his career. For Yoko XXXVI, he worked with the renowned Nymphenburg Porcelain Makers in Munich, Bavaria, over a two year period, continuing to explore questions of representational perfection.

His sculptural vocabulary harks back to classical antiquity and the elegance and idealism of neoclassical marbles such as Canova’s The Three Graces (1814-17), while also invoking modernist realism as instanced by Degas’ La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans (1881). In Browns distinctive take on classical sculpture, the place of an idealised heroine is taken by the real-life figure of the artists wife in a casual pose. Yoko becomes a conflation of the generic and the individual.
