Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector

February 11, 2015 by Ishah

Barbican Centre

12 February 2015 - 25 May 2015

The Barbican Gallery presents the first major exhibition in the UK to display the personal collections of post-war and contemporary artists. In this captivating show 'Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as collector', we are able to see artists collectables, curiosities, one of-a-kind curiosities, rare artifacts and specimens, the exhibition enables the viewer to understand the influences, obsessions and motives behind each fourteen artists.

The curator of the show, Lydia Yee says,'Sometimes things are very rare objects and the artists are really connoisseurs, like Howard Hodgkin who's got an incredible collection of Indian Mughal paintings. I was also interested in the opposite extreme, the kind of collector who's not so discriminating and has a huge jumble of things.'

Many artists live with and make direct use of their collections. Collecting objects for research and study is key to the practice of many artists in the exhibition. Artists such as, Arman, Peter Blake, Hanne Darbove, Edmund de Waa, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin and Andy Warhol.
