Helen Beard was born in Birmingham in 1971. She studied at Bournemouth and Poole college of art, before working in the film industry, as a stylist and art director. Alongside this she has made art in a diverse range of disciplines including: paintings, colleges and tapestries.
The needlepoint pieces focus on a fundamental theme in which the artist explores relationships and sex and it’s importance on the human psyche. Taught by her grandmother to do needlepoint at an early age, the artist uses this traditional medium to make work about sex, subverting it’s usual use in homemaking, replacing explicit imagery where there would normally be saccharine scenes of landscapes and puppy dogs.
She currently lives and works in Brighton.
