Produced by Rachel Howard for her solo show ‘Rachel Howard Invited by Philippa Van Loon’ at Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam, which displayed the artist’s bewitching paintings in the context of a museum synonymous with family portraiture. It is a fitting home for Howard – many of her portraits originate from photographs of the artist’s family or friends, bled through the back of the canvas then reworked by hand. The paintings have an otherworldly, deeply personal presence, expressing – as Colin Glen has it – ‘the exquisite fragility of hope’. This poster remembers the late Isabella Blow.
Howard was born in County Durham and graduated from Goldsmiths College, London, in 1991. She was awarded the Princes Trust Award in 1992 to support her art practice, was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2004 and received the British Council Award in 2008.
