Peregrine Honig - Bed of Roses

October 11, 2012 by Kay

24.09.2012 to 15.10.2012

During her residency at Ace in Argentina, Peregrine Honig will develop a body of large figurative drawings pulling from vintage pin up posters and calendar girls, each woman maimed by the oppression of the country she represents.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artwork is delicate and disturbing -- deceptively simple executions of complicated subjects. It documents early sexual awakenings, the visual manifestation of disease, and the social anxieties of realized and fictional characters. By illustrating the stifled habits of residual adolescent vulnerability, I document trends in fear -- commercial and independent, personal and political. I am intent on revealing and exposing the subtext veiled within the broader cultural narrative. Rendering the process of innocence into awareness, my work chronicles the beauty of awkward seasons. Every woman remembers the first time she was told as a girl she was dressed inappropriately. We are captivated by the resilience of our own virgin selves and beguiled by the lure of shameless sensuality. My images are a garden of intimate scenarios, inviting viewers to observe without trespassing or offending.

SILK SCARVES BY HONIG

Peregrine Honig collaborated with Other Criteria to produce a gorgeously luxurious, limited edition silk scarf. A drawing of a cockerel, overwritten by the word ‘sucker’ printed in rose petal pink, shows the combination of delicate drawing and sarcastic wit that is a typical of Honig’s work. The scarf comes in a beautifully designed artist box, in an edition of 100.
