Polly Borland - YOU

September 18, 2013 by Kay

Private View: September 18, 6-8pm

Exhibition: September 18 - October 19, 2013

Paul Kasmin Gallery, 511 West 27 Street, New York

PK SHOP is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of photographs by Polly Borland entitled YOU. On view at 511 West 27 Street, the exhibition will present an intimate look at works from two of the artist’s latest series.

YOU is a meditation on love, from the heightened anticipation of possibility to its ultimately crushing disappointment. Photographing mirrors that support and reflect stuffed figures and mannequins bound in taut flesh-tone stockings, Borland masterfully creates abstract compositions that are both visceral and hauntingly beautiful. The evocative cocoon-like forms undergo a transformative process within the series. Desire and yearning bud from a fragile formless state, only to be displaced by rejection, hopelessness and madness as the series progresses.

Polly Borland Wonky V, 2013 archival pigment print 35.43 x 29.52 inches 90 x 75 cm Edition of 6

Borland’s initial inspiration for YOUbegan when she relocated from London to Hollywood, with its promises of glamour and its artificial brand of beauty. The impetus for the latter part of the series was viewing the Museum Victoria’s extensive collection of medical equipment and clothing from psychiatric institutions, including artifacts produced by patients, from throughout her native Australia. All objects markedly devoid of love. Through this body of work, Borland poignantly touches on the universal conditions of love, desire and identity.
