The Bed in History and Contemporary Art

Jan 30, 2015 May 25, 2015

As the territory of birth, love, illness, death and as the most anthropomorphic shape in the history of all civilizations, beds are possibly one of the most reproduced objects in art and one of the most common metaphors for the human condition. The exhibition focuses on the historical and iconographic significance of the bed. 'Sleepless' will include and juxtapose paintings, sculptures, drawings, photos, and video works spanning from old masters to present-day artists.

Acclaimed artists such as, Lucian Freud, Rachel Whiteread, Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Jim Lambie, Sarah Lucas and Rachel Howard use the bed’s idiosyncratic shape in their work.

Rachel Howard will be showing ‘Consuela’ - 2007- Household gloss and acrylic on canvas 152.4 x 152.4 cm, in this group exhibition.
