Gonzalo Lebrija: “Measuring the Distance”

September 8, 2015 by Mary

Curated by Humberto Moro, “Measuring the Distance” is the first solo exhibition of Mexican artist Gonzalo Lebrija in a Spanish institution.

The exhibition is articulated through the composition of dialogues between works created in different periods. The title, “Measuring the Distance”, refers, on the one hand, the essential impulse to quantify and, secondly, establishing a metaphorical connection with the mathematical principle of the "N" as a suggestion and "X" as an uncertainty. And trying to measure the distance between what is supposed to be and what is unknown.

The time and its fragility are some features of the work of Lebrija. The artist uses various media including drawing, video, photography, sculpture and installation. The relationship between the different techniques used, the speed and ease with which the artist moves from one medium to another, reveal the complexity of its production.Lebrija uses as well his own body, his abilities and limitations, as a raw material of his creative process. Lebrija is one of the leaders of the international contemporary art scene.
